Observed Cosmological Constant is Predicted by Curved-Spacetime Renormalization

چکیده
I show that a cosmological constant of roughly the observed magnitude in the present universe is a consequence of general relativity and quantum field theory in curved spacetime, and was first predicted by Parker and Toms in 1985. This prediction follows from the “new partially summed form” of the propagator in curved spacetime. The effect is based on the contribution of massive particles to the vacuum energy and pressure. The predicted value of the present cosmological constant is proportional to the energy-density of matter in the present universe.

Testable Consequences of Curved-Spacetime Renormalization
I consider certain renormalization effects in curved spacetime quantum field theory. In the very early universe these effects resemble those of a cosmological constant, while in the present universe they give rise to a significant finite renormalization of the gravitational constant. The relevant renormalization term and its relation to elementary particle masses was first found by Parker and T...
متن کاملSpacetimes admitting quasi-conformal curvature tensor
The object of the present paper is to study spacetimes admitting quasi-conformal curvature tensor. At first we prove that a quasi-conformally flat spacetime is Einstein and hence it is of constant curvature and the energy momentum tensor of such a spacetime satisfying Einstein's field equation with cosmological constant is covariant constant. Next, we prove that if the perfect flui...
متن کاملRenormalization-group improved effective potential for finite grand unified theories in curved spacetime
The renormalization-group improved effective potential —to leading-log and in the linear curvature approximation— is constructed for “finite” theories in curved spacetime. It is not trivial and displays a quite interesting, exponential-like structure —in contrast with the case of flat spacetime where it coincides with the classical potential. Several possible cosmological applications, as curva...
متن کاملCosmological Acceleration Through Transition to Constant Scalar Curvature
As shown by Parker and Raval, quantum field theory in curved spacetime gives a possible mechanism for explaining the observed recent acceleration of the universe. This mechanism is consistent with a zero cosmological constant, and causes the universe to make a transition to an accelerating expansion in which the scalar curvature, R, of spacetime remains constant. We show that this model agrees ...
متن کاملMultigravity and Space Time Foam
Abstract. We consider a multigravity approach to spacetime foam. As an application we give indications on the computation of the cosmological constant, considered as an eigenvalue of a Sturm-Liouville problem. A variational approach with Gaussian trial wave functionals is used as a method to study such a problem. We approximate the equation to one loop in a Schwarzschild background and a zeta f...
